(Norcross, GA) – Yesterday, an amended version of the Laken Riley Act passed out of the Senate; the updated version of this harmful legislation is expected to be taken up for a final vote on Wednesday afternoon. The legislation, which perpetuates incorrect narratives about immigrant communities and violates longstanding constitutional rights, received the support of our Georgia U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock.

“This legislation will do nothing to make Georgia families safer and will lead to an increase in racial profiling that disproportionately impacts Latino community members,” says Jerry Gonzalez, CEO at GALEO Impact Fund. “It is not only disappointing to see Sen. Ossoff and Sen. Warnock vote in favor of legislation that will lead to innocent children being placed into unlawful detention, but it is a betrayal of the diverse coalition of Georgians that elected these two men to represent our families’ interests in the United States Senate.”

The GALEO Impact Fund calls on leaders to advocate for the comprehensive immigration reform that Georgians continue to demand: reform that protects the security of the United States while including a legal pathway to citizenship.

We call on our leaders to negotiate for meaningful legislation without compromising the lives and livelihoods of our families. We urge Georgia’s delegation members in the House of Representatives to vote against the Laken Riley Act.
