Norcross, GA – The GALEO Impact Fund stands in solidarity with peaceful protesters in Los Angeles and across the country who are courageously demanding justice, dignity, and an end to the criminalization of immigrant communities. The peaceful demonstrations that have been taking place reflect the rightful outrage of people who have been targeted, scapegoated, and dehumanized by the current administration. We unequivocally condemn the Trump administration’s dangerous and disproportionate response to these protests which is only fanning the flames of division in the United States.
Additionally, this week’s appalling treatment of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla— a Latino leader who dared to question Donald Trump’s extremist immigration agenda— marks an unsettling new chapter in this administration’s use of violence and intimidation as a political tactic. No one, least of all a duly elected federal official, should face retaliation for speaking truth to power. It is chillingly clear that the Trump administration is using the guise of public safety to seek political retribution.
Finally, the crackdown and the administration’s weaponization of immigration enforcement are not isolated but are instead fueled by a larger agenda. The reconciliation bill now under consideration in the Senate would supercharge the ongoing assault on our communities by funneling more than $150 billion into unaccountable enforcement, detention, and mass deportation. If passed, this legislation would also slash access to health care and food assistance for millions, disproportionately hurting vulnerable children and seniors in Georgia.
Make no mistake, H.R. 1 seeks to provide enormous tax breaks to billionaires and corporations while deepening poverty and tearing families apart. That is why GALEO Impact Fund joined over 250 organizations nationwide in calling on Congress to reject this bill. It is often said that budgets are moral documents. Tragically, this bill reflects a set of values that are cruel, reckless, and un-American.
At GALEO Impact Fund, we urge everyone to be safe as they continue raising their voices peacefully. We will not be intimidated into silence, nor will we allow our communities to be vilified. And we must not accept a budget that trades the futures of working families for the political and financial gain of the powerful few.
We urge Georgia’s Senators— and all Senators— to stand on the right side of history: reject H.R.1 and oppose the politics of fear and division.
