Recap of ‘A Day Without Immigrants’

On February 14, 2022, immigrants around the nation gathered for the protest, ‘A Day Without Immigrants,’ which was organized by TikTok star with 2.5 million followers, Carlos Eduardo Espina. Espina originally started off by offering citizenship classes on TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic, which then quickly grew to speak directly to immigrants about issues that matter (Guerrero, 2022). With quick popularity on social media, Espina led the efforts of organizing a day where immigrants don’t show up to work, attend school, or spend money in the United States.

The protest on Feb. 14 was meant to pressure President Biden into prioritizing the protection of immigrants. Thousands of immigrants from across the country participated by not conducting their daily activities and rallied in front of the White House.

Within an hour of Espina’s arrival to the White House, TikTok influencers of his generation, who are also active in immigrant rights on the platform, began to arrive (Manriquez, 2022). Throughout the course of the protest, smartphones were used to launch apps and broadcast live on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

Around 8 A.M, protesters began to arrive from all over the United States. Espina had wondered on Sunday evening what it would take for his rally to be considered a success, which he had planned through the use of social media (Manriquez, 2022). Those involved in the immigration rights movements questioned whether a TikTok star, like Espina, could convert online engagement into real action.

“Valentine’s Day is one of the days with the most economic activity in the whole year,” Espina tells Latino Rebels from the Rio Grande Valley, where he’s working to help unaccompanied migrant children (Manriquez, 2022). “But underneath all the celebrations are millions of documented undocumented immigrants who sustain the economy. Yet, these same immigrants continue to be mistreated and denied a path to permanent legal status.”

Not only did Espina start a movement through social media, but he captured the attention of Congress representatives such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). “Strikes, general strikes—whatever it takes for people to realize the value of immigrant labor. I mean, you take a date to a nice restaurant—who do you think is making the food? Who do you think has the hands that feed us?” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) when asked about Carlos’ initiative by Latino Rebels on Wednesday (Manriquez, 2022). “I support any sort of action or efforts that our immigrant community and those who stand in solidarity with them are committing to highlighting the necessity that they have in our system.”

With the use of social media engagement, Espina was able to capture the attention of immigrants and gather them to protest on February 14 for what they had been promised – an immigration reform.

ESPANOL:
