The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are awards for the artistic and technical work in the film industry. They are considered by many to be the most prestigious and significant awards given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. These awards are an international recognition of excellence in the entertainment industry worldwide (About Oscars, 2022). This year, the 94th Academy Awards are set to be held on March 5, 2022 beginning at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center featuring several of Latino nominees (Seth, 2022).
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ariana DeBose, Guillermo Del Toro, Carlos Lopez Estrada, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are amongst the Latinos nominated for an Oscar.
Lin Manuel Miranda is a Puerto Rican-born artist and composer. Miranda composed Disney’s “Encanto” which earned three nominations in the categories of Best Animated Film, Best Soundtrack and Best Original Song. With this nomination, Miranda has a second shot at earning EGOT status — which is reserved for performers who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award (Ardila, 2022).
Ariana DeBose, who is an Afro-Latina of Puerto Rican descent, is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance reviving the iconic role of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s version of “West Side Story” (Acevedo, 2022).
Guillermo Del Toro is a Mexican film director, producer, screenwriter, and author. He is nominated for directing and co-producing “Nightmare Alley” (Ardila, 2022).
Carlos Lopez Estrada is the son of the renowned Mexican producer, Carla Estrada, who has made important productions and telenovelas for Televisa. Estrada is competing with the film “Raya and the Last Dragon” for Best Animated Feature (Ardila, 2022).
Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are the married couple who are competing for their starring performances in “Parallel Mothers” and “Being the Ricardos” for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively (Ardila, 2022). Cruz and Bardem are both of Spanish descent and are making their reappearance at the Oscars.
With a line up of various different Latinos representing different areas in the film and media industry, the Oscars are set to show a diverse cast of nominees for the 94th annual Academy Awards.

Los Premios de la Academia, también conocidos como los Oscars, son premios para el trabajo artístico y técnico en la industria del cine. Son considerados por muchos como el premio más prestigioso y significativo otorgado por la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas. Estos premios son un reconocimiento internacional a la excelencia en la industria del entretenimiento en todo el mundo (About Oscars, 2022). Este año, los 94 Premios de la Academia se celebrarán el 5 de marzo de 2022 a partir de las 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET en el Teatro Dolby en el Hollywood & Highland Center con varios nominados Latinos (Seth, 2022).

Penélope Cruz y Javier Bardem son el matrimonio que compite por sus papeles protagonistas en “Parallel Mothers” y “Siendo los Ricardos” al Mejor Actor y Mejor Actriz (Ardila, 2022). Cruz y Bardem son de ascendencia española haciendo su reaparición en los Oscar.
Con una alineación de varios Latinos diferentes que representan diferentes áreas en la industria del cine y los medios, los Oscars están listos para mostrar un elenco diverso de nominados para la 94a entrega anual de los Premios de la Academia.
