The GALEO Impact Fund applauds the Biden-Harris Administration’s recent move to allow over 500,000 spouses of U.S. citizens without legal status to apply for lawful permanent residence without having to leave the United States; an estimated 50,000 children within these families are expected to be eligible for this process as well. This policy shift could benefit more than 33,000 families in Georgia alone. The announcement also streamlines certain employment-based visa processes for DACA recipients and undocumented immigrants with college degrees.

“We celebrate today’s announcement, which provides a renewed sense of safety and security for tens of thousands of working families in Georgia,” says Kyle Gomez-Leineweber, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy at GALEO Impact Fund. “This action by President Biden signifies the most meaningful policy win for our community since DACA was first created 12 years ago and is the result of a coordinated push by advocacy organizations and mixed-status families throughout Georgia and the United States.”

As our community celebrates today’s great news, the GALEO Impact Fund will continue working with statewide and national partners to urge our congressional leaders to advance legislation that provides permanent relief to mixed-status families, repairs and improves our broken immigration system, and establishes a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who add immense economic and cultural value to our nation.
