The midterm elections are coming up fast. As the Democratic party attempts to keep holding on to their House majority this November, the Latinx people are currently not fully convinced on the policies that the party is presenting. There is a surprising number of Hispanic voters that are siding with Republicans on “major issues in this year’s midterm elections, according to data released this week by both parties’ House Campaigns” (Caputo 2022). According to Democratic strategist Carlos Odio, Republicans can take advantage of their current lead, but Democrats can still fight although they are on limited time.
Ever since 2020, the Republican Party surprised the Democrats during the presidential election by gaining a large count of the Latinx vote during Donald Trump’s run for re-election. The National Republican Campaign Committee says that Latinx population trusts congressional Republicans more than Democrats when it comes to issues such as immigration, the economy and crime. This data lines up with what the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee came up with as well. Representative Carlos Gimenez believes that the main reason why is because the Democratic Party is not pushing to connect with the Latinx community on a cultural level. They are not making a point that they are indeed on the side of the law, that they are people of faith. Democrats have been assuming that the people knew these facts. Above all, the main problem that is affecting the Latinx vote is the widespread misinformation. It is everywhere and it is easy to access.
Currently the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is setting up Spanish websites to combat against the growing number of disinformation sites aiming for a Latinx audience. They are also strengthening their defenses when there are false claims. This is because back in 2020 the Democratic party was very laxed. They had the idea that some of the misinformation was so absurd that no one would believe the lies. Tim Persico, the executive director of the DCCC says that, “it turns out if someone says something – no matter how false it is or obviously untrue […]- and you don’t respond forcefully, it’s going to hurt you.” (Caputo 2022).

Demócratas luchan por el voto Latinx

Las elecciones de mitad de período se acercan rápidamente. Mientras que el partido Demócrata intenta mantener la mayoría en su Casa este noviembre, los latinos no están completamente convencidos de las políticas que el partido está presentando. Hay un número sorprendente de votantes hispanos que se están poniendo del lado de los Republicanos en “temas importantes en las elecciones de mitad de período de este año, según los datos publicados esta semana por las campañas de la Cámara de Representantes de ambos partidos” (Caputo 2022). Según el estratega Demócrata Carlos Odio, los Republicanos pueden aprovechar su ventaja actual, pero los Demócratas aún pueden luchar aunque tengan un tiempo limitado.
Desde 2020, el partido Republicano sorprendió a los Demócratas durante las elecciones presidenciales al obtener un gran recuento del voto de los latinos durante la candidatura de Donald Trump para la reelección. El Comité de Campaña Nacional Republicana dice que los latinos confían más en los Republicanos del Congreso que en los Demócratas cuando se trata de temas como la inmigración, la economía y el crimen. Estos datos se alinean con lo que el Comité Demócrata de Campaña del Congreso también propuso. El diputado Carlos Giménez cree que la razón principal es porque el partido Demócrata no está haciendo un gran trabajo en la conexión con la comunidad latina a nivel cultural. Ellos no están haciendo un punto de que de hecho están del lado de la ley, que son personas de fe. Los demócratas han estado constantemente solo asumiendo que el pueblo conocía estos hechos. Sobre todo, el principal problema que está afectando el voto Latino es la desinformación generalizada. Está en todas partes y es de fácil acceso.
Actualmente, el Comité Demócrata de Campaña del Congreso está estableciendo sitios web españoles para combatir el creciente número de sitios de desinformación dirigidos a una audiencia latina. También están reforzando sus defensas cuando hay afirmaciones falsas, porque en 2020 el partido demócrata estaba muy laxo porque tenían la idea de que parte de la desinformación era tan absurda que nadie creería las mentiras. Tim Persico, el director ejecutivo de la DCCC dice que, “resulta que si alguien dice algo – no importa que falso o obviamente falso […]- y no respondes con fuerza, te va a lastimar.” (Caputo 2022).
