FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The GALEO Impact Fund expresses deep concern about President Biden’s recent executive order, which would impose stricter limits on asylum seekers and shut down the possibility of even accessing asylum once a daily threshold of border encounters is exceeded.
“Unfortunately, the executive actions announced today do nothing to address the driving factors of migration to the United States and may very well lead to an increase of dangerous, unlawful border crossings,” says Kyle Gomez-Leineweber, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy at GALEO Impact Fund. “While we strongly oppose these new measures, we remain steadfast in our advocacy for comprehensive immigration reform that preserves human rights, develops more pathways to lawful migration, and expands legal status to longtime immigrants who continue to add immense economic and cultural value to Georgia and beyond.”
Despite today’s news, the GALEO Impact Fund continues to work alongside statewide and national partners to make clear that long-term immigrants unequivocally deserve work permits that shield them from exploitation and empower them to fill vital roles in our workforce, effectively matching their skills with the demands of employers. Such measures would have the potential to significantly bolster the United States’ annual tax revenue by an estimated $13.8 billion while also providing a new degree of security and dignity to Georgia’s mixed-status families, workforce, and communities.
The GALEO Impact Fund continues to urge President Biden to provide the opportunity for work permits to long-term immigrants who have contributed to our society by working and paying taxes for years and, in many cases, decades. We emphasize the critical importance of providing safety and security to long-term immigrants—our friends, neighbors, spouses, parents, and relatives—who have been instrumental in building Georgia’s economy and nurturing American families.
